Choosing an electric saw – 5 main rules you need to know

There is a very small number of tools that a prudent owner should always have at hand. One of them is a 16 inch chainsaw
Cutting branches in the garden at the dacha, fixing a fence, furniture, a door – all these are the little things of everyday life that are difficult to do without a high-quality electric saw. Basically, this simple tool is designed to perform diverse tasks of cleaning the garden or harvesting firewood; it is indispensable for those who constantly live in the country or have a private house with a large garden. With a high-quality and convenient power saw, you can easily cut a small tree trunk or make a blank for a future element of wooden decor. In some cases, this unit can be used as a brush cutter. The main advantage of the electric saw is the complete absence of exhaust gases that subsequently appear after fuel combustion. Therefore, electric saws can be safely used indoors. Choosing the right electric chain saw model is a very serious step. There are many criteria on which the power and quality of work depend. To help you choose the perfect model, we recommend that you consider five main parameters that are responsible for the performance of a particular electric saw model.

How long is the bus enough?

When buying an electric chain saw (as well as any other), first, you need to pay attention to the working length of the bar. Naturally, the longer the tire of the model, the larger the diameter of the tree trunk it can cut. It is important to note that a large tire has increased resistance to motor torque. Therefore, the length must necessarily correspond to the power of the motor.
As a rule, manufacturers immediately indicate the size of the allowed tire in the technical characteristics of the model. Is it possible to establish more authentic? Of course, but this is fraught with engine breakdown. Low engine power may not withstand overloads, in addition, energy costs will increase, and you will need to put in much more effort to cut wood.
For household electric saws, the length of the bus bar generally ranges from 25 to 40 cm. Very short bus bars are installed quite rarely – this is impractical. Electric saws with a 35 cm bar or with a 40 cm bar are considered optimal. In cases where two saw models have the same power, but different tires, it is better to take the model with a shorter tire. It will cut boards much faster, and it is more convenient to work.
Models that are used on a semi-professional level have tires 45 cm and 50 cm long. They are more powerful and are designed for long-term active use in working with different types of wood, including very hard – oak, clear, acacia.
Professional units, which are bought for felling and cutting thick tree trunks, are a special category of electric saws. For them, the length of the bus is very important, since it directly determines the performance. For quick and productive work on felling trees, it is worth taking an electric saw with a tire, the parameters of which range from 60 to 90 cm.

What does the chain pitch affect?

A saw chain is made up of many riveted links. And the chain pitch is the distance between three adjacent rivets, which stand side by side, divided in half. This is the main parameter that determines the cutting ability and the quality of future work. Electric chain saws have three digital designations for the chain pitch – 0.325 *, 1/4 *, and 0.375 *, which is often denoted 3/8 *.
Electric chainsaws with 0.325 * and 1/4 * chain pitch are generally inexpensive and intended for hobbyists. Such chains are called low-profile, they have reduced vibration, they cut accurately, without uneven edges, but they are easily dull under prolonged loads. Better to use low profile chains for quick, responsive gardening or for fixing wood products.
Chains with a pitch of 3/8 ” are the most common; more than 80% of the most popular brands complete their tools with them. These saws are designed for active use, both at home and at professional enterprises. Most of these are professional models, powerful and versatile, designed to perform diverse tasks. Their power and technical parameters allow active work for a long period of time.
A large chain pitch allows you to quickly cut the desired tree trunk, but when using such a chain, the edges of the tree are very loose. Therefore, large pitch chains are more often used for rough work. In addition, the minus of such saws is increased vibration. But their unsurpassed plus is high performance.

The location of the motor is not for everybody.

There are two types of motor locations on electric saws and you can easily identify them at a glance at the tool:

  • transverse – the axis of the engine of the model is located perpendicular to the chain;
  • longitudinal – the axis runs along with the tire.

Saws with a transverse motor are, in turn, also divided into those with the motor on the right side and those with the motor on the left. They have a number of advantages, but for some consumers, they seem inconvenient due to the fact that such units have a shifted center of gravity. Moreover, they are more efficient in sawing logs.

The main advantages of the transverse arrangement of the engine include:

  • 100% transmission of the power of the running engine to the chain;
  • reliable operation of the gears of the reducer;
  • in spite of everything, such saws are more convenient to work;
  • lack of recoil when turned on.

Longitudinal saws are narrower and lighter, maneuverable, and comfortable to work at different angles. They are perfectly balanced in weight, which is very important for the long-term performance of diverse work – the operator’s hands are less tired. Working with them in trees is a pleasure.

But, unfortunately, do not forget the disadvantages of such a tool:
  • Heavier hang up;
  • when the saw is turned on, it can suddenly “jump” to the side;
  • the gear used in the gearbox eats up some power, reducing the saw’s performance.

Much depends on the power

The power of any saw is the speed at which it pulls the saw chain while cutting. Power also affects the depth of the cut. That is, the higher the power, the faster and deeper the saw cuts.
It is clear that the nature of her future work – amateur or professional – depends on the power of an electric saw. Therefore, when choosing a model, first, it is necessary to determine the volume and nature of future work. You should not choose a model that is more powerful than you need, because it is heavier, draws more electricity, and will cause you discomfort while performing work: fatigue, back pain. For small works on a personal plot, it is enough to choose an economical saw with a power of 1.5-2 kW. Models with a power of 2.2-2.5 kW are semi-professional and professional units, designed specifically for long-term work, easily sawing hardwood. There are even more powerful industrial electric saws – 9 kW of power, they are very effective when felling wood, they can work from the mains or from a high-quality diesel or gasoline generator.
